I chose the Mendoza area for the sole intention of visiting vineyards in the Maipu and San Rafael areas. This part of my trip to the area was as pleasant as I anticipated with the hospitality of the owners matched by the beauty of the valleys. It was like visiting Napa 30 years ago before wine tasting became a tourist industry.

I was pleasantly surprised, however, with the city of Mendoza itself. Beautifully laid out with a high density of metropolitan greens, an enormous and magnificent park adjacent to the city and a great quality of life from arts to restaurants to outdoor activities. Mendoza residents are warm and welcoming and our hotel (Park Hyatt) was world class.

One example of Mendoza hospitality occurred when my rental car refused to start in a small suburb of Mendoza. I entered a restaurant near where my car was parked and asked the owner to help me phone the rental agency. He not only contacted the agency and browbeat them to bring a replacement car right away but he also insisted we have something to eat and then provided us with wonderful empanadas, salads and steaks and refused to take payment.

My trip throughout Argentina was excellent and my next visit will definitely include Mendoza.
